Everyone is standing outside at the back of the boat, throwing pieces of bread, mostly simit, the Turkish bagel you see everywhere, encouraging a flock of seagulls to follow us.

No trip is complete without a half-dozen strangers kissing Stella and then taking selfies with her. She looks mad, but she’s just a very serious baby.

On the island there are no cars. There’s a main tourist area by the port, lots of restaurants and hotels. Then the island has all these old and quite large homes. Almost like estates, sometimes three stories tall. It’s off-season so most homes were shuttered so it gave the island an eerie quality.

We took the 45 minute horse-drawn carriage ride around the island. Twice.

Christine Gilbert

I’ve been dragging my husband around the world since 2008 always with the promise that, “Yes, Drew there will definitely be hammocks there.”
