10 Must-See Fairytale Destinations Around The World

You might not pick up on it right away while watching Disney films, but for decades, when Disney is preparing to make a new animated film, they will send concept artists on location to far fetched areas of the world to find inspiration from real life. Why do they do this? Because Disney knows that the world is amazing, and the only way to fully appreciate it’s diversity and beauty is to actually be there and experience it.

With that in mind, we found destinations we love around the world that we know are as beautiful as any destination you could find in a Disney film.

Neuschwanstein Castle

One of the most visited castles in Germany and with good reason, the castle is also called the “Fairytale Castle” because of it’s iconic Romanesque design. The castle was one of several castles that inspired the castle in Disney’s Cinderella

Hobbiton – Matamata, New Zealand

Yes Hobbiton, the shire, built for the Lord Of The Rings films, still exists, and is a real place you can visit in New Zealand. It is located in the small agricultural town of Matamata, about a two-hour drive from Aukland, the capitol of New Zealand. Though there are now 44 different Hobbit holes to tour, the property still functions as a working sheep and beef farm.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, China

One of the most remarkable natural spectacles in the world, in a country that most westerners find incredibly challenging. Head to the Hunan province of China and be absolutely blown away by what you see. Take the “Hundred Dragons Sky Lift” up to see as much of the wild and overgrown pillar-like peaks that surround the area.

And if you really want to freak everyone in the family out, take a walk along the longest glass bridge in the world (three football fields long!)

Hallstatt, Austria

To any who visit, Hallstatt is the perfect encapsulation of any idea you might have about what Austria is. A perfect example of an old European town, Hallstatt is surrounded by natural beauty with equally impressive old architecture. Take the Salzbergbahn Hallstatt rail in order to get the most amazing panoramic views of your life, and visit the Salt Mines to see what natural resource brought prosperity to Hallstatt in it’s earliest days.

Waitomo Glowworm Caves, New Zealand

And now for something truly magical. Another New Zealand destination, the Waitomo caves are exactly what the name implies. Take a guided boat tour through these caves where you can see Arachnocampa luminosa, aka the New Zealand Glowworm, illuminating the nearly pitch black caves. The worm’s glow is a method they use to lure prey in, who may view the glowing cave ceiling as if it was the night sky.

Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine – Yakushima, Japan

The inspiration for the setting in the Studio Ghibli animated film Princess Mononoke, this island of japan is one of the most beautiful and remarkable forests in the world. Beautiful in it’s wild, moss covered rocks and ancient cedar trees. This is one of many destinations in Japan that any outdoor enthusiast has to visit.

On an island off the continent of Africa is one of the most unique locations you will ever encounter. The only place to see a particular type of the beautiful Baobab tree. The entire island is a wonderful experience for the adventurous traveler, and the only place you will be able to see beauty quite on this scale.

Ice Village, Harbin, China

Our only seasonal location, visiting Harbin in Winter will allow you to experience a one-of-a-kind experience in the form of a full scale ice-village. Every year artisans put hundreds of hours of work to bring one of the biggest man made spectacles you will find in China. Began in 1963, the month-long festival begins each year in early January, so plan in advance to get the most out of your trip there.

Taj Mahal – Agra, India

One of the seven wonders of the world, The Taj remains one of the most magnificent man made structures in the entire world. Perfectly symmetrical and build in the 1600’s, the Taj serves as a tomb for the favorite wife of Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan.

The Taj is located in Agra, a city not very far from New Delhi, and it can get quite hot there through much of the year, so if you travel with your family, plan your visit for as early in the day as possible. In addition to being the coolest part of the day, the early light will be perfect for the photos you will want to take while you are there.

Faroe Islands

If you think you have seen majestic cliffs along the seaside, think again, because the Faroe Islands have that locked down. There might be similar locations around the world but none seem quite so carved out of the seascape like in Faroe. Located in the middle the North Atlantic Ocean and between Norway and Iceland. For nature lovers, the Faroe Islands is a true paradise.
